Through machine-learning technology, TurboAppeal makes the process of appealing property taxes simple, which can aide the masses, not a select few.
What problem do you solve and how do you solve it better than the competition?
TurboAppeal is a simple service to appeal a homeowners’ property taxes. In under a minute a homeowner can sign-up to file their property tax appeal. TurboAppeal is the only solution, nationally that leverages big data analytics to generate more accurate evidence to therefore better represent a homeowner in their property tax appeal
How did you get started?
TurboAppeal was founded by converging the domain expertise of a high profile attorney, the technological capabilities of a pioneer in data science, and a serial entrepreneur, to solve a growing pain point amongst homeowners. When the 3 co-founders of TurboAppeal came together, their goal was to innovate a simple process where homeowners can get their fair shake at contesting their property taxes. After 2 years of diligence, TurboAppeal was founded in early 2015 out of 1871 in Chicago, when they came out of a successful beta.
How has your company culture evolved as TurboAppeal has grown?
As we have grown, our culture has evolved in that we’ve had to instill an environment of continued learning. As new skillsets and experience continue to enter through the hiring of new talent, communication and collaboration have become ever more important. We facilitate this collaboration through enabling cross functional communication and creating a comfortable environment where relationships have been fostered and everyone has a deep loyalty to our mission together.
What are your primary goals for TurboAppeal?
We want to be the leading technology, nationally, that powers property tax appeals for property owners and service providers.
Where do you see TurboAppeal in two years? Five? Ten?
We see TurboAppeal as the national technology leader, powering more than 50% of all national property tax appeals within 5 years.
What’s the No. 1 thing on your to-do list?
Scale.
In your opinion, what are some of the pros and cons of being an Illinois business?
Pros: Access to talent and the great network that Chicago brings.
Cons: Tax and costs of starting a business in Illinois are much greater than in many other states.
What are the biggest challenges you face as you scale your business?
Uncertainties around government behavior both locally and nationally as well as the ability to acquire the right talent.
